On June 29, 1992, Keith Johnson enlisted as an infantryman in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. He spent 18 years in the National Guard, deploying to Bosnia, Guantanamo Bay, and Iraq, as well as a humanitarian mission to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. In 2010, he transferred to the Army Reserve and continued his career as an Army Reserve Career Counselor. In this role, he was recognized as the Battalion Career Counselor of the Year in 2013 and the Army Reserve runner-up for NCO of the Year in 2015.
While going through the retirement process in 2023, Keith wasn’t feeling right. During an urgent care check-up, he learned the troubling news: He had Stage IV Renal Cell Carcinoma.
While doodling in a notebook one day, Keith decided to combine his Army rank and the cancer symbol to create a logo. As a show of solidarity between his family, friends, and oncology team, he then had shirts created with this logo and dubbed his support and care team his “Army of Angels.” While selling off the excess supply, Keith realized there was a unique opportunity to raise funds for fellow service members, veterans, and their families who were battling cancer.
After a humbling outpouring of support, Keith decided to start paying it forward to other service members and their families, and the Army of Angels was born.
